A new family-owned wine bar in Mount Rainier, the first of its kind for the Route 1 corridor, is gearing up for a smooth launch by early November.

The Hyattsville Wire got a glimpse of the Era Wine Bar at 3300 Rhode Island Ave., a few doors down from Pennyroyal Station.

The interior is completely new and spacious with modern international decor. There is a large lounge and bar area on the ground floor, a small private bar at the rear as well as a members-only cellar which includes private temperature-controlled wine racks. And there are already a few chairs and tables set up outside on the sidewalk to sit outside.

Michelle Grant, co-owner with husband Ka-ton, when asked what types of wines would be on the menu, told the Wire that they were big on ‘catwalk’ wines as a way to encourage people to try. new things.

“I’m really excited about our Petillant Natural (sparkling) malbec, our Chilean chardonnay and our red blends from Turkey and Uruguay,” she said.

Era will serve wine from countries like Bulgaria, Georgia and Croatia with more than 15 countries represented on its one ‘by the glass’ menu. Michelle said the most surprising discovery she had while sourcing wine for the opening was the variety of high quality wines available in different regions at a great price.

In addition to an extensive wine list, Era will also offer small plates of international inspiration.

“We want to highlight the commonalities in the ingredients that are shared around the world,” Michelle said. “The goal is to prepare dishes with simple ingredients that are rich in flavor. Some of my favorites are mom’s samosas, our Greek lamb sliders, and of course our Moroccan tagine.

As for opening the wine bar, Michelle said it was a process that took a lot of patience.

“Like all other businesses, we faced many challenges in completing a full build during the pandemic. We have experienced delays across the board, supply chain issues and drastic price increases for raw materials, food and wine, ”she said. “We had to be very patient and have the support of the Town of Mount Rainier, many friends in the industry and so on. to get things going. We also received overwhelming support from our local community and neighborhood.

Era Wine Bar will offer club memberships on two levels: Cru and Grand Cru, where members enjoy discounts on each visit and access to its ‘meet the winemaker’ events, as well as discounts on the rental fees of cellar for private events. Its cellar, reserved for members, includes custom-made wine racks, accompanied by an annual subscription. In addition, Era will offer its members wine courses and other special programs.

Currently Michelle and Ka-ton are up to their knees with final inspections and are currently hiring with ongoing training. When they open, reservations will be available on opentable.com.
