Bacardi launches Shake Your Future in South Africa


JOHANNESBURG, South Africa–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Bacardi, the world’s largest privately held spirits company, brings Shake your future – it’s free, professional bartender training program for disadvantaged young adults – in South Africa for the first time.

Program participants will receive training to develop a career in the art of bartending and mixology, and invaluable work experience in some of the best bars and restaurants in the industry. – by giving them the chance to make a new start in life.

The launch in South Africa marks a significant milestone in the continued expansion of the program, which originally launched in 2018. To date, Shake your future trained young adults in France, Spain and Italy, and 80% of graduates to have ensured successful careers in the hospitality industry.

The 16 weeks Shake your future The course kicks off today in South Africa, with 20 aspiring bartenders – 10 in Gauteng and 10 in the Western Cape – and plans are in place for future program rollouts in the coming months.

According to a Statistics South Africa report, the country’s youth unemployment rate is at an incredibly high 66.5%. Meanwhile, talent in the industry (hotels, restaurants and cafes) has been one of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a challenge that the Bacardi family business has recognized and is committed to playing a part in solving. Through his Shake your future programme, the company encourages new talent and offers them opportunities within the industry, while also supporting its partners in the hospitality industry who are struggling to find qualified staff.

Bacardi has partnered with Managed People Solutions (MPS) and Thirst Bar Services in South Africa on selecting candidates and creating a program that provides students with the best hands-on experiences in bartending, including the art of bartending and mixology, and practical skills behind the bar.

Graduates will receive globally recognized certification with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust Level 1 accreditation, which will provide them with career opportunities in the hospitality industry and beyond.
