Bombay HC quashes proclamation against Riyaz Bhati, co-accused of Param Bir Singh in extortion case

The Bombay High Court quashed a proclamation issued against Riyaz Bhati, a suspected intermediary, who was declared on the run along with former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh in an alleged extortion case.

Judge Revati Dere quashed the lower court order issuing a proclamation and declaring Bhati at large.

His lawyer Taraq Sayed argued that the HC had previously quashed the proclamation order against another defendant, Vinay Singh, whose case was identical.

On November 17, 2021, a city magistrate declared Param Bir Singh a “declared fugitive”. Along with him, other defendants in the case, Bhati and a certain Vinay Singh, were also declared at large on a plea from the Mumbai criminal branch stating that they could not locate these people to execute the warrant. arrest against them in an extortion case.

A complaint was filed against them at Goregaon Police Station in October last year, against Singh.

The extortion complaint was lodged by a hotelier who alleged that Sachin Vaze, now fired from the post of deputy police inspector, in collusion with Singh, and others coerced him into paying Rs. 11.92 lakhs for allow him to run his two restaurant-bars in the western suburbs of the city.

Police say Bhati used to collect money from bar and restaurant owners and send it to Vaze.
