Eat and drink your way around the world at this new IG-worthy international themed venue

In February of this year, a refreshing new page was added to Calgary Food Diaries. DJ NEWBOY, also known as Ronnie Mupambwa, opened his world-inspired restaurant and bar, Chakalaka, which now occupies the former 1410 World Bier Haus building. The restaurant created a lot of buzz at the time, thanks to its grand opening. A little over 9 months and the buzz is far from over. Yes, we’re here to tell you why.

Let’s talk about the atmosphere first. This gigantic multi-story building with a rooftop patio features upscale interior that’s straight up Instagrammable. The vibe, surprisingly, is super cool and inviting. This is a unique experience between whimsical and casual that is perfect for any occasion and any gathering, whether it is a family reunion, a cocktail party and a snack with girlfriends. or even an office party.

The restaurant-bar menu, which is nothing short of a world food tour, does justice to this welcoming interior. So, you’ll find tandoori chicken alongside miso tofu sitting next to jerk chicken and shrimp tacos. The menu is as eclectic as it is elaborate. And if the names appeal to you, wait until you see their artistic and appetizing plating.

The menu also offers a variety of exotic meats (think kangaroo, ostrich, alligator, and frog legs) that won’t break your wallet. Honestly confession: We didn’t try the exotic meats, although apparently those are the ones that draw the crowds.

Along with all of this amazing food (oh, and hot stone cooking at the table too), there are also tons of quirky cocktails and a carefully curated selection of wines and beers. The Kilauea, a Hawaiian cocktail, will definitely be on our next order as well.

Now here’s the best part – they have a Happy Hour too much. You’ll find food on the happy hour menu starting at $ 8 and cocktails starting at $ 2.75. Awesome, isn’t it!

The restaurant lives up to its triple motto of being inclusive, bringing people together and providing them with a memorable dining experience. It’s the kind of place that becomes your must-see after just one visit.

We suggest you check out their Insta for a visual teaser of what to expect. And here is the Chakalaka website, you’ll need them once you see the tempting AF delicacies they’ve programmed. Nothing!
