Internet users furious as Mumbai restaurant denies entry to woman wearing hijab; clerk says “we don’t allow anyone in the sari too”

In a viral video circulating on social media, a restaurant in Worli in Mumbai refused entry to a woman wearing rida, a type of hijab.

In an undated and unverified video widely shared on Instagram, Tap Resto Bar in Worli’s Atria Mall asked the women’s friends to tell her to remove her hijab before entering the restaurant.

In the 2 minute clip, another restaurant employee can be heard saying, “We don’t even allow people who come to the restaurant with saris”. He adds: “We do not allow Indian clothes in the restaurant.”

The video has sparked anger among internet users for its macabre corporate policy of walking into a restaurant.

Sharing the video, an Instagram username sakinamaimoonn wrote: “It amazes me that such absurd restrictions still exist in a supposedly ‘secular’ society. Today my friend was denied entry. in a restaurant because she was wearing the rida, a type of hijab, and was told to take it off because it was “inappropriate”.

The video quickly went viral, angering many Indians who denounced the restaurant’s “discriminatory” and “elitist” rules.

“Hate won’t get you far!” Wrote one Instagram user. “It’s infuriating,” wrote another.

“Really shameful,” wrote a third Instagram user, while another wrote, “there is something extremely wrong about this place.”
