Like many automakers, Lincoln is eyeing an electric future. Ford’s luxury brand said Wednesday it plans to launch four battery-powered models by 2026.

And as a preview of what’s to come, Lincoln has unveiled a concept SUV called the Star. The super-futuristic vehicle won’t make it to production, but it’s packed with cool features and is certainly great to look at. Lincoln says he designed the Star to be “the ultimate sanctuary” for customers.

The star has a sleek, swept-back silhouette and an illuminated Lincoln badge on the front which is surrounded by a constellation of small badge shapes. Suicide doors that create a wide-open entrance into the SUV cabin. Overall, the Star looks more like something out of a cutting-edge startup than a century-old auto company.

Imagined for a future of autonomous vehicles, the Star is more a living room on wheels than a vehicle to think about driving. As such, passenger comfort is the main concern of the SUV. The front seats swivel to face rearward and the steering wheel stows away when not needed.

Everyone benefits from a wide, angled seat with a leg rest. A refrigerated display between the rear seats keeps your sparkling wine chilled. And the drawers integrated into the legrests are intended to contain the slippers of the passengers. Because why not take off your shoes if a computer is driving?

Three “moods of rejuvenation” use smells, sounds and lightning to create a relaxing environment suited to the time of day. “Coastal Morning uses soft ocean sounds, a scent of sea mist, and the soft, warm glow of the sun with dynamic lighting to replicate a beach walk at sunrise,” says Lincoln. “Evening Chill mirrors twilight using a soothing nocturnal soundtrack coordinated with video of the night sky and evergreen fragrance.”

The Star also does fun things with storage. The SUV’s front trunk – possible without a bulky engine taking up space – acts like a giant drawer that opens. A bench seat folds out from the regular trunk, when you want to bring your standalone Lincoln hatchback.

Once the country’s best-selling luxury brand, Lincoln’s sales have declined in recent decades as consumers prefer German and Japanese competitors. As electric vehicles grow in popularity, a strong stable of battery-powered options could help Lincoln regain some of its former glory. It projects that at least 50% of its sales will be electric by 2025.
