September 2021 – It’s Shanghai


Just in time to take a break from the daily grind, the National Week holidays are fast approaching, which means plenty of free time to roll the dice on trips within the country or stay in town for eat and drink whatever you need.

We vote for the latter. So here are some new openings (and some closings) to jumpstart your consumption plans.

The Colca Group expands even further with more place concepts, including a second Azul Italiano opening on Moganshan Lu near M50 Creative Space which should open by the end of the year.

They’re also opening up a new grill-focused space, similar to an elevated version of Burnt Ends in Singapore, on Wuxing Lu called Grill Azul. The latter should open by the Chinese New Year.

Lunch, a satellite kitchen brought by the team behind Klay, will soon begin delivery of Xuhui. While the menu of VShef Hardeep Somal is Indian-inspired (it gets its name from the lunch box stands used in India, after all), no dish will be the same as Klay’s. Rather, the entire menu is specially designed for delivery.

The Zuk Bar in Sukhothai expanding, adding approximately 50 spaces plus a Thai garden with gazebo. In the same building, Urban Cafe will become entirely Thai, abandoning other Southeast Asian dishes for a strictly Thai menu that delves deeper into the country’s diverse cuisine.

The restaurant’s decor and tableware will also get a facelift, with a more modern look extending into the newly landscaped garden which will be adorned with plants imported from Thailand.

A True legend (Pistolera, Big Bamboo, The Blind Pig) hoarding can now be seen on the ever popular corner of Changle and Donghu Lu, taking over You’re in luck old excavations.

So what is going to fill this huge space? None other than Beast from the East Haven dedicated to everything from a range of flagship beers to experimental beers created by none other than master brewer Beast of the East, Matt Jimenez. Plus, there will be cocktails galore.

The culinary menu will delve into the world of barbecued smoked meats, bringing to life some of Blind Pigs’ most notable dishes, as well as brick oven pizzas, salads and charcoal-grilled seafood.

Charlie's Burger Restaurant Shanghai

Too many burgers is not a thing. Okay, in the context of physical health, calorie consumption, and macro balance, it certainly is. But for the general well-being, the pleasure and the happiness, we are on team burger. Thus, we have a fourth location of Charlie’s opening under Social on Wuding Lu as a victory. You can choose to disagree; we just can’t be friends then.

Just around the corner from the new Charlie’s you’ll also find the newly opened second location of Slurp, a relaxed Yunnan restaurant with all of Kunming ersi lemongrass pork noodles and fried cheese and – of course – all mushroom dishes.

However, this sort of Slurp 2.0 is actually called Slurp & Sip because it also offers a range of cocktails. The libations mainly focus on ingredients native to Yunnan – like rose, cilantro, Yunnan rice wine, Yunnan wild peppers and more.

The hip hop club, 1 Oak, aims to open in Shanghai by the end of this month on the South Bund, near the Lupu Bridge. The original 1 Oak began in Manhattan in 2007, and has since expanded to Las Vegas, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Dubai.

Famous DJs like Swizz Beatz and celebs like The Weeknd, Kanye West, Bruno Mars, Jay-Z and Beyonce are known to grace these opulent and energetic venues, and we hope so will the front- Shanghai post.

Speaking of partying late at night, Revolving door is a new neighborhood joint with most drinks under 80 RMB. “We’re not a poncy cocktail bar, although we love our spirits,” the owners boast.

Beastie Boys, Nirvana, The Smiths and more are on the playlist and are open late (until 3:30 am). This happy meeting place has just opened on Hefei Lu near Danshui Lu.

An Indonesian inspired menu is what you’ll find at PAWON Saji 8, an affordable option to satisfy your craving for everything from gado-gado and Ikan bakar with beef rendang and ayam goreng. Plus, treats like are teler and es campur – one of our favorite forms of crushed ice – are on offer.

It is located in the basement of Jing’an Kerry Center, so you can mash up those Indonesian comfort food while sitting in the comfort of the air conditioning.

Chopia, a tour on Chipotle but with a “healthier” leaning menu, open this summer at More than eating on Jullu Lu. Burritos, burrito bowls, and tacos are mostly what you’ll find, but with buzzwords like “keto” and “protein blast” sprinkled throughout the menu. Vegan options, mainly using Omnipork, are also available.

spanish wine bar El Rincon is now on Maoming Lu, sporting cheese and meat platters, steaks, and – oddly enough – frozen milkshakes topped with ice cubes. Everyone needs this wanghong shoot, we guess.

The second location of Evolution park is now an option on Changshou Lu, on the border of Jing’an and Putuo. Expect the same photogenic fare – ruby ​​red beet avocado roe, shiny orange pumpkin puree surrounding the fried tilapia – plus equally colorful energy platters and loaded salad options. In a nutshell, you come here for the photos more than anything else.

Paulaner in Xintiandi closed in June, and we recently heard that Shanghai Brewery takes over the second floor of the lease to open – what we can only guess – will be another tap room. But with the word “brasserie” in the name, one can never be too sure. Will it be another wine bar? Joke…

After a little over a year, the place is reborn The apartment To closed again. The space was quickly taken over by a new interactive form of entertainment company called The red box which focuses on the combination of theater and catering. Expect live Cabaret performances paired with Western fusion cuisine. The soft opening starts this weekend.
